When you’re looking for the best restaurant in Terrigal, there’s a few select choices that really come to mind, and we like to think that the Joker & Thief is one of them. It’s a venue that started as an idea in conversation over a beer with three mates. As Central Coast locals themselves, they wanted to create a classy space that supported their local area of Terrigal, by providing high quality food and drinks for reasonable prices. It got its name from song lyrics from Bob Dylan and Wolfmother, where ties are split across many demographics as something many can relate to.
This idea came from their desire for a restaurant in Terrigal that catered to a more mature crowd. The idea stuck, and went from a possibility to a reality very quickly. After months of planning, the Joker & Thief was born.
The Joker & Thief takes you into another world and transports you to what can be described as a Mid Century Modern with a nod to Art Deco and luxe Rock n Roll edge. Your experience begins as soon as you enter from the bottom of the stairs, as you transport into a space of unpretentious decadence. Once you reach the top, you’re met with our signature neon sign that sets your mood for the night. You’ll be greeted by our Host who will welcome you to your table.
As you walk through and look to your left, you’ll see our dusty pink wallpaper that pays homage to Bob Dylan with his famous “All Along the Watchtower” lyrics that reads “there must be some way out of here”. Take your gaze to our high ceilings and leafy green botanicals filling up the space.
To the right you’ll see our beautiful high class bar with timber panelling, brass sconce lighting and concrete accents. Our bar book proudly supports and takes inspiration from local Australian influence. Our wines are featured from country wide vineyards such as areas like Orange, Adelaide Hills and Gundagai. The creative bar specialises in crafting five signature cocktails exclusive to The Joker & Thief, including our infamous watermelon ‘Catch a Thief’, and gin ‘Purple Haze’. You can’t go past experiencing any of the classic cocktails from the talented bar team either, for when you just want to go back to basics. With a whopping 10 beers on tap, the hardest part is choosing one. J&T also features a rotating Locals Tap that circulates some of the Central Coast’s best breweries from Bay Road, Block N Tackle and Six Strings.
All interiors are designed by Fabric Architecture in collaboration with Stewart + Highfield. The design team pursued in creating a space where you could be dressed to the nines, while still sitting comfortably next to somebody in ripped jeans. It provides an all-day destination as an airy lunch spot, before turning into a moody and plush dinner restaurant and bar. It’s like no other venue in Terrigal, perfectly blending the two settings. There is a classic and formal dining room towards the back of the venue, perfect for families to enjoy a quieter dining experience. As well, at the front of the venue you can enjoy regular live music on high bar tables in the public bar area. This room features overhanging plants, and almost no overhead lighting to give character in the flattering space. Along the bench is where you can enjoy the sunset and watch the space transform into the night time.
When you arrive at your table, you’ll notice marble tabletops, velvet upholstery and contrasting deep hues. A balmy ocean breeze and smell of salt water will fill the air as you soak up the sun and the best views of Terrigal beachfront. The Joker & Thief offer full table service, so you can relax in your seat while everything is brought out to you. Your waiter will provide you with menus, or you can scan the QR codes on your table. The menu is created by Head Chef, Dane Walker and centres around a Modern Australian cuisine.
There is something for everyone on this diverse menu such as the famous JT Chilli and Garlic Prawn Linguine, loaded burgers, a range of fresh market seafood and kids meals, as well as plenty of vegan and gluten free options. This menu is also considerably sourced from local suppliers as a part of their operational initiatives.
So when it comes to choosing your next dinner spot in Terrigal, with a balance of good cocktails and delicious food, we strongly recommend you visit The Joker & Thief.
